treeJuniperus is a genus of coniferous trees and shrubs in the cypress family (Cupressaceae), widely distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic to tropical Africa. Junipers are evergreen plants with needle-like and/or scale-like leaves, varying in size from tall trees 20–40 metres (66–131 feet) to columnar or low-spreading shrubs with trailing branches. The female seed cones are distinctive, fleshy, and fruit-like, forming a berry-like structure (galbulus) that is edible.
Tolerates light (sandy), medium (loamy), and heavy (clay) soils. Prefers well-drained soil. Can grow in mildly acid, neutral, and basic (mildly alkaline) soils, including very alkaline soils. Prefers dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought.
