Alocasia is a genus of rhizomatous or tuberous, broad-leaved, perennial flowering plants from the family Araceae, native to tropical and subtropical Asia and eastern Australia. The plants feature large cordate or sagittate leaves growing 20 to 90 cm in length on long petioles, with small araceous flowers that are often hidden behind the leaf petioles. While the corms of some species can be processed to make them edible, raw plants contain calcium oxalate raphide crystals and other irritants that can cause tongue and throat numbness, swelling, and difficulty breathing.

Elephant Ear is usually grown from division rather than seed. Lift an established clump and split it into sections, each with roots and a growing point, then replant.
