Asclepias tuberosa is a perennial milkweed native to eastern and southwestern North America, named for the butterflies attracted to its vibrant flowers and abundant nectar. The plant grows 0.3–1 m tall with spirally arranged, lanceolate leaves (3–12 cm long), producing showy umbels of orange, yellow, or red flowers from April to September.
