Nepeta cataria is a short-lived perennial herbaceous plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to southern and eastern Europe, northern parts of the Middle East, and Central Asia. It grows 30–100 cm tall with square stems, grayish-green serrated leaves, and small bilabiate flowers arranged in raceme spikes that range from white to purple. The plant is renowned for its intense attraction to cats, caused by the terpene nepetalactone, and has been used traditionally in herbal teas for its sedative and relaxant properties.
