treeHornbeams are hardwood trees in the genus Carpinus belonging to the Betulaceae family. They are small, slow-growing, understory trees with a natural rounded form, typically growing 4.5–9 metres tall and wide, though the European hornbeam can reach up to 32 metres. The smooth, gray trunk exhibits distinctive muscle-like fluting, and deciduous leaves are dark-green, alternate and simple with coarsely-serrated margins, turning various shades of yellow, orange and red in autumn.
Tolerates a wide range of soils; prefers well-draining, fertile soil but adaptable to various conditions including clay and chalky soils.
