Pyracantha coccinea is an evergreen to semi-evergreen broadleaf shrub that typically grows 6 to 18 feet tall and equally wide, with an upright, stiff habit. The plant produces clusters of white flowers in late spring to early summer, followed by bright orange-red berries that mature in fall and persist through winter. The stems bear sharp thorns, and the leaves are dark green and shiny.
