California poppy is an annual or short-lived perennial flowering plant native to the western United States. It grows 13–30 cm tall with distinctive blue-green feathery foliage and produces silky, cup-shaped flowers in brilliant shades of orange, yellow, red, pink, and occasionally white. The flowers close at night and in cloudy weather, and mature plants self-seed readily, producing thousands of tiny black seeds in dehiscent capsules.

Start California poppy indoors about 3 weeks before your last frost. Seeds usually come up in around 10 days. Move seedlings out once the danger of frost has passed, in full sun, spaced about 15 cm apart. Expect the first blooms in roughly 60 days.
