Cobaea scandens is a self-clinging perennial climber native to Mexico, belonging to the phlox family (Polemoniaceae). It produces large, bell-shaped flowers that open white and mature to violet, with a pronounced ruff resembling a cup and saucer. The plant is widely cultivated for its twining habit and highly ornamental flowers, which are scented when mature and pollinated by bats in their native habitat.

Start Cup and saucer vine indoors about 8 weeks before your last frost. Seeds usually come up in around 14 days. Move seedlings out once the danger of frost has passed, in full sun, spaced about 30 cm apart. Expect the first blooms in roughly 120 days.
