flowerDianthus is a genus of approximately 340 species of flowering plants in the family Caryophyllaceae, native mainly to Europe and Asia. The species are mostly herbaceous perennials (though a few are annual or biennial) with opposite, simple, often glaucous grey-green to blue-green linear leaves. The flowers typically have five petals with frilled or pinked margins and are pale to dark pink in almost all species, with some notable exceptions like D. knappii with yellow flowers. Many species are noted for their strong spicy fragrance and ability to attract pollinators.
Prefers well-drained soil; suitable for light (sandy), medium (loamy), and heavy (clay) soils. Prefers neutral to alkaline (mildly basic) soils; can tolerate slightly acidic soils down to pH 6.
