Holy basil is an aromatic annual or short-lived perennial subshrub in the mint family, native to tropical and subtropical regions of Southern Asia. It is an erect, many-branched plant with hairy stems that grows rapidly to a height of 30–60 cm, with leaves that tend to have a purple cast and are strongly scented. The plant easily propagates itself by seed and is valued for its spicy fragrance and use in culinary and traditional medicine applications.
