Mentha pulegium is an annual to perennial flowering plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. It typically grows to about 40 cm in height with square stems, opposite narrowly oval leaves 2–3 cm long, and small mauve flowers densely packed in whorls. Crushed leaves emit a very strong fragrance similar to spearmint. The plant has been used traditionally as a culinary herb and folk remedy, though it is hepatotoxic and potentially dangerous.
