The plant is an evergreen annual climber native to South and Southeast Asia, producing yellow flowers and elongated fruits resembling cucumbers that can reach up to 30 cm in length.
Suitable for light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils; prefers well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil; suitable pH ranges from mildly acid to basic (mildly alkaline) soils; can grow in very acid and very alkaline soils.
