Smoke bush is a deciduous shrub or small tree with an upright, spreading habit that grows 5–7 metres tall. The plant is best known for its distinctive wispy, feathery flower plumes in smoky pink to pinkish-purple that appear in mid-summer, creating a cloud-like effect that gives the plant its common name. The foliage is rounded oval, green with a waxy sheen, and transforms in autumn to striking shades of peach, yellow, scarlet, or reddish-purple. The crushed leaves emit a radish-like smell.
