Teff (Eragrostis tef) is an annual cereal grass native to the Ethiopian and Eritrean highlands, where it has been cultivated for its tiny edible seeds since at least 1000 BCE. It is a self-pollinated, fine-stemmed grass with shallow but extensive fibrous roots, capable of growing at altitudes from sea level to 3,200 metres and adapted to drought and high-temperature conditions through its C4 photosynthetic pathway.
