Oats are annual grasses grown as a cover crop, for forage, or their grain. They were domesticated in the region that is now present-day Iran and Iraq and are now cultivated worldwide. Oats grow thickly and vigorously, allowing them to outcompete many weeds, and they release certain chemicals into the soil that inhibit the germination of other plants. Compared to other cereals, oats are relatively free from diseases and tolerate cold winters reasonably well, making them important in areas with cool, wet summers.
