Aconitum napellus, commonly known as monkshood or aconite, is a highly toxic perennial flowering plant native to western and central Europe. It is herbaceous, grows to approximately 1 metre tall, with hairless stems and rounded, palmately-divided leaves that are 5–10 cm in diameter. The distinctive dark purple to bluish-purple flowers are helmet-shaped and appear in mid-autumn, making it popular in temperate zone gardens despite its extreme toxicity.
