Arctium lappa L.
Greater Burdock is a biennial plant in the Asteraceae family, native to temperate Eurasia. In its first year, it forms a dense rosette of leaves, and in its second year it bolts to heights of 2-10 feet with large heart-shaped leaves and purple thistle-like flowers. The plant develops long fleshy tap roots reaching depths of 3 feet and produces distinctive spherical seed heads with hooked bracts that disperse via animal dispersal. In Asia and other parts of the world, burdock has been cultivated for its edible roots and traditional medicinal uses.
