flowerAsclepias syriaca is a clonal perennial flowering plant native to southern Canada and much of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. It typically grows 3 to 5 feet tall (0.91–1.52 m), but can reach 8 feet in optimal conditions. The plant has opposite, broadly ovate-lanceolate leaves with reddish veins and velvety undersides, producing highly fragrant, nectariferous flowers that range from white through pinkish to purplish in umbellate cymes. All parts of the plant produce white latex when cut, and the seeds are enclosed in large follicles with characteristic long, white flossy hairs.
Grows in sandy soils as well as other kinds of soils; tolerates a broad array of soil types in sunny areas.
