Hakonechloa macra is a small, shade-loving, clump-forming bunchgrass native to Japan that slowly spreads in circumference. The stalks cascade in a graceful rounded fountain shape, with thin papery leaves that resemble bamboo and produce a distinctive rustling sound in the wind. Flowers bloom in midsummer from leaf nodes near the ends of the stalks, displaying light purple colors that fade to tan.
