Daphne mezereum is a deciduous shrub native to most of Europe and Western Asia, growing 1–1.5 metres tall. It produces strongly scented pink, purple, or white flowers in early to mid-spring on bare stems before leaves appear, followed by bright red (occasionally yellow) poisonous drupes that are dispersed by thrushes and other fruit-eating birds.
