shrubIlex is a genus of over 570 species of flowering plants in the family Aquifoliaceae, commonly known as holly. The plants are generally evergreen or deciduous trees, shrubs, and climbers with simple, alternate glossy leaves frequently with a spiny leaf margin, inconspicuous greenish-white flowers with four petals, and small fruits. Species are generally dioecious, with male and female flowers on different plants, and range from sea level to more than 2,000 m elevation across temperate and subtropical regions worldwide.
Tolerates most soils including light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. Suitable for mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. Prefers moist soil but resents waterlogging.
