Indigofera is a large genus of over 750 species of flowering plants belonging to the pea family Fabaceae, widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions. Species are mostly shrubs, though some are small trees or herbaceous perennials, with pinnate leaves and small flowers in red, purple, pink, or brown hues that grow in leaf axils. The genus is renowned as a major source of the blue dye 'indigo' and has been used medicinally and as a food source in Africa for centuries.
