It produces distinctive white or purplish flower spikes and has deeply lobed, spiny foliage, reaching 1.0–1.2 metres in height and valued for ornamental gardens and as a nectar source for butterflies and other pollinators.
Prefers medium soil; tolerates light sandy to heavy clay soils
