European beech is a large, graceful, deciduous tree with a short trunk and low branching habit, typically growing 50 to 60 feet tall with dense, erect, oval to rounded crowns. It features dark gray, thin, smooth bark; oval to elliptic, glossy dark green leaves with wavy margins; and produces yellowish-green and reddish-brown flowers in spring. The female flowers develop into edible triangular nuts that ripen in fall.
