Japanese barberry is a deciduous woody shrub native to Japan with thorny spiny branches bearing single spines at each node. It grows 1-2 m tall with small spatulate to oval green leaves that turn red in autumn, pale yellow flowers in spring, and bright red to orange-red berries that persist through winter.
