The poinsettia is a deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub or small tree in the spurge family native to Mexico and Guatemala. It is particularly well known for its red and green foliage and is widely used in Christmas floral displays. The true flowers are small, egg-shaped, and yellow, appearing at the base of showy red leafy bracts or modified leaves. Commercially available varieties feature bract colors in shades of red, pink, white, and orangish-peach, with some varieties displaying red and white, pink and white, or green and white bracts.
