Swamp milkweed is an upright herbaceous perennial native to North America, growing 100–150 cm tall from thick, fleshy white roots. The plant produces fragrant pink to mauve flowers (sometimes white) in rounded clusters during early to mid-summer, followed by green follicles that release silky-haired seeds adapted for wind dispersal. Like other milkweeds, it contains toxic latex that repels many insects and mammals, but is highly attractive to butterflies and pollinators.
