The money tree is a tropical wetland tree native to Southern Mexico to Bolivia and Northern Brazil, found in freshwater swamps, estuaries, and rainforests. In its native habitat it can grow up to 60 feet tall, but typically reaches 6 to 8 feet as a houseplant. The tree has shiny, green, palmately compound leaves with 5 to 9 leaflets measuring 5 to 10 inches long. Large fragrant flowers with cream-colored petals and red-tipped stamens appear on outdoor plants after 4 to 5 years, though houseplants are unlikely to flower. The trunks are flexible enough to be braided together.
